Quirky days out in Herefordshire

It’s fun to go on days out, especially with friends and/or family, but sometimes it can get a bit, well, samey. If you’re looking for unusual things to do in Herefordshire, we’ve collated some ideas for quirky days out that will delight the whole group.

Llama trekking

Everyone likes llamas – their furry nonchalant faces are just too cute. How about going trekking with some of them? At Old King Street Farm, you can help call in, catch, halter, groom and walk a llama through the farm. You can also stroll throughout the glorious Herefordshire countryside with your llama on a lead. There will then be the opportunity to visit the llama weaving studio, where the beautiful llama wool is spun on a large floor loom.

Wye Valley Helicopter Tour

Take in a bird’s eye view of the wonderful Wye Valley on a helicopter tour for three. This area of outstanding natural beauty can be viewed almost all at once – including the River Wye, the wildlife, Symonds Yat Rock and the gorgeous green rolling hills. This flight enables three people to take to the skies in an exclusive 40-minute Wye Valley and Forest of Dean tour. Buckle up and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Gin-making experience

Gin lovers, rejoice! Enjoy a gin-making experience at Black Mountains Botanicals, an award-winning distillery on Bridge Farm in Michaelchurch, Escley. You’ll gain a fascinating insight into gin-making, including the history, process and ingredients. Then you’ll have a spot of lunch, and afterwards, the experts will show you how to distill your own bottle of gin. You can choose from a range of botanicals to create your perfect tipple.

Blacksmithing experience

For those who don’t mind getting their hands a bit dirty, at Oldfield Forge, you can learn all about traditional blacksmithing techniques. This ancient craft has been given a guided tour-style visit. You’ll be able to get hands-on and become a blacksmith for the day. From holding the tongs as you watch the red-hot metal form to wielding the hammer – you can forge a number of utensils, such as knives, barbecue tools and hammers.

Visit Choccotastic

If you’re a chocolate fan, you’ll love spending a tasty afternoon at Choccotastic, Ledbury. It offers handmade Belgian chocolates in various shapes, patterns and decorations. There’s also a vegan range. If you’re brave enough, you can take the Chocoholic Platter Challenge. If you can demolish a platter of chocolatey treats (and not be sick), you’ll go onto the virtual wall of fame. Each month, one winner will be picked from the wall of fame and given some Choccotastic goodies.

Horse riding

Great for families with children (4 years+), Tipton Hall Riding School allows you to horse ride off the beaten track and discover the beautiful views of Herefordshire. There are also a set of jumps at both their outdoor and indoor arenas.

We hope you feel inspired to try out some or all of these quirky days in Herefordshire. This area is brimming with stuff to do, things to see and tasty things to eat and drink. Be sure to pop into The Hope & Anchor while you’re here for a spot of breakfast, lunch or dinner. We’ve got plenty of locally sourced, fresh and tasty produce.
