With its wide range of activities on the river and off, Ross-on-Wye is no doubt the perfect staycation destination to enjoy the great outdoors. It’s just one of the many reasons why solo travellers, couples, groups of friends, and outdoorsy families with older children visit our beautiful market town.

Families with children of all ages however will love the long list of family-friendly attractions available. Here’s just a selection of fun days out you and your family can enjoy right here in Ross-on-Wye.

1. Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo

As a top-rated attraction for visitors of all ages, the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo seems a great place to start our rundown of family-friendly days out.

Blogger Mummy Travels explains why it’s one of her top places to visit when holidaying or day-tripping in the region:

“The Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo isn’t huge but it’s a lovely place to wander with kids – whichever way you look, there are butterflies to spot, plus staff to show us caterpillars hiding on the underside of leaves, explain the difference between butterflies and moths, chrysalids and cocoons, and the life cycle of these glorious insects.”

The zoo is home to countless butterfly species, all of which fly freely and are absolutely stunning to observe.

Visiting Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo also offers an excellent opportunity to support their important conservation work. Whilst next door there’s the chance to extend your visit with a trip to the Amazing Hedge Puzzle and Wye Valley Miniature Golf, which are both based on-site.

2. Goodrich Castle

Explore the history of Ross-on-Wye at one of the county’s – if not the country’s – best-preserved medieval castles.

A visit to Goodrich Castle takes you on a journey through the ages, right back to the 11th century when the castle was first constructed. Goodrich is drenched in history, with the siege of the castle during the Civil War particularly interesting.

As well as delving deeper into Goodrich Castle’s history, including its months spent under siege, the attraction hosts numerous exhibitions and events. Its upcoming February Half Term Explorer Quest offers dates for every parent’s diary.

3. Wyedean Canoe and Adventure Centre

Explore the great outdoors in a family-friendly way at the Wyedean Canoe and Adventure Centre.

There are so many great activities to enjoy on-site, including canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, raft building, miniature golf, 4X4 off-road rides, cycling, and high ropes courses. In fact, you’ll probably struggle to fit everything into just one visit.

Due to the nature of their activities, the Wyedean Canoe and Adventure Centre is only suitable for visitors aged 8 years or over. Age restrictions also apply to selected activities.

4. Symonds Yat West Leisure Park

Families holidaying with younger children may prefer a visit to Symonds Yat West Leisure Park. Based on the banks of the beautiful River Wye and in close proximity to Ross-on-Wye, the leisure park promises a selection of family-friendly activities for visitors aged 4 and above.

The park isn’t just a stunning spot to while away the day. You’ll find river cruises, a playground, crazy golf, go-karts, a skateboard park, a paddling pool, arcades, and fairground rides for all the family to enjoy.

5. Ross-on-Wye Mystery Treasure Trail

Play detective on your trip by taking on the Ross-on-Wye Mystery Treasure Trail. Can you find the clues to solve the mystery?

The trail is great fun and a brilliant way to see the sights throughout Ross-on-Wye. If you solve the mystery, you’ll even get the chance to win some real treasure with all correct answers entered into a prize draw to win £100.

Whilst the trail can be completed at your own pace – which is handy with younger children – its 2-mile route takes two hours on average to explore. Please note, the Ross-on-Wye Mystery Treasure Trail isn’t pushchair or wheelchair friendly, with organisers deeming it suitable for ages 6 years and upwards due to the hilly sections of the trail.

Accessing all these family-friendly attractions and so much more couldn’t be simpler when staying with us. Our accommodation opens very soon – in Spring 2022 to be exact! Enquire now and start planning your family break in Ross-on-Wye.
